The Second Sunday of Advent invites us to prepare our hearts for Jesus in a meaningful way, as we anticipate celebrating His birth at Christmas. This season encourages us not only to welcome Him as our Savior but to be open to His presence in our daily lives, whether through the Holy Eucharist, the teachings of the Bible, or in our faith community. Moreover, we are reminded to be ready for His eventual return as our Judge at the end of our lives at the end of the world.
In the First Reading, the Prophet Baruch talks about God guiding the exiled Israelites back to Jerusalem. This imagery serves as a reminder for us to turn away from our sins and return to God during this Advent season.
The Second Reading, from Paul's Letter to the Philippians, emphasizes the importance of preparing for Christ's return by living lives filled with love, purity, and responsibility.
In the Gospel, John the Baptist calls the people to ready themselves for the coming Messiah. He urges them to repent, renew their lives, and symbolize their repentance through baptism.
During Advent, we are invited to transform our lives so that Jesus can be reborn in us this Christmas. This means addressing the spiritual “valleys” created by our neglect, such as a lack of prayer or living our faith superficially. We should correct any dishonest behaviors, whether at work or home, and seek reconciliation if we've held grudges or fostered hatred. Now is the time to clear these obstacles from our hearts.
As individuals, we may need to tackle long-held resentments, a habit of criticizing others, a reluctance to forgive, dishonest practices, or tendencies to bully. We must also lower the “mountains” of our pride and self-centeredness by embracing humility and serving others sincerely. This Advent season is a call for introspection and transformation, helping us prepare for the joyous celebration of Christmas.
